How Art Collecting Works
Welcome to "How Art Collecting Works", where we will take you through the collecting process, step by step, with an example from the Art Gallery of Hamilton's Art Sales + Services.
At the Art Gallery of Hamilton we are fortunate to work with all stages of art collectors. Some have a long history of collecting, and those collectors typically have a lot of confidence and know what they are looking for and how the experience will unfold. But what if you are new to collecting? New collectors usually have a blank wall, know they want to put an original artwork on it, but not be entirely sure where to begin.
Step 1: Consultation
What room is the work going in? Do you know how large the wall is? Do you already have a sense of which artists on our website that you like? Are you looking for multiple pieces? We are going to help you establish all of the parameters for your acquisition.
In this example, we worked with the clients to gather dimensions, take photos of the walls needing artworks, review floorplans and note any logistical concerns around timing, budget, installation, framing and the like.

Step 2: Proposal
Based on the information gathered during the consultation, a consultant will curate a selection of artwork for the collectors' consideration. While we typically find works one the first round after an in depth consultation, sometimes a collector will go through several rounds of revisions to the final selection of works depending on the scope of the project. We often reach out to artists to find works from their studios that have yet to reach the public.
This selection package was in depth, encapsulated a summary of our consultation, offered multiple combinations for each space, and included a list of our terms and services for reference.
The clients had wonderful taste, and made a selection from the package for installation.
Step 3: Installation
Once you have selected the artwork for your home, the AGH Art Sales + Services team may make arrangements for framing, delivery and installation. The experienced installers we work with will ensure that each piece is securely and professionally hung, optimizing lines of sight, to enhance the overall look and feel of your space.
