For her first major solo exhibition in a Southern Ontario museum, Farheen Haq (now based in Victoria, BC) recognizes the resilience and knowledge systems of her mother, a Muslim woman who arrived in the Niagara region from Pakistan in 1970. The exhibition examines intergenerational relationships, connecting Haq’s mother’s experience as a young Muslim bride arriving in Canada, with her own experience as a mother. Haq’s work in performance, video, and sculpture is a form of self-inquiry interwoven with an awareness of her family’s responsibilities toward the work of reconciliation as settlers on Haudenosaunee territories. The artist explores how she carries the past and how she determines its legacy into the future.
