stylo starr

stylo starr is a Hamilton, Ontario-based collage artist whose work centres nature, fantasy, and the Afrofuture through richly layered compositions built from vintage and contemporary Black media, including photographs, magazines, books, album covers, and, more recently, self-shot photography.

A self-taught collagist with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a diploma in graphic design, her practice is informed by the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, Afrofuturism, and artists such as Lorna Simpson, Mickalene Thomas, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Working intuitively across both hand-cut analogue and digital collage, stylo starr is drawn to the tactile energy of found materials and to collage as a visual language capable of holding layered, nuanced meaning. Her work often incorporates references to astrology, crystals, herbalism, lepidopterology, and the metaphysical, reflecting a practice shaped by observation, symbolism, and imaginative transformation.

Her work is included in the Art Gallery of Hamilton’s permanent collection, including 89DAMES.
