Adam Matak

Adam Matak is an innovative Hamilton-based artist and educator. His practice explores the surprising beauty of our daily routines and traditions through labour-intensive processes. Using scalpels, small scissors, and tweezers, he cuts and arranges thousands of individual paint swatches by hand, allowing subtle shifts in tone to build light, shadow, texture, and image over time. Constructed entirely from discarded colour samples, these works transform a temporary, promotional material into something reflective and enduring.

Rather than drawing from a single artist or movement, Matak’s work is shaped by broader visual traditions that use repetition, accumulation, and everyday materials to generate meaning. His images often depict interiors, backyards, and domestic accumulations, reinforcing his focus on lived space and experience.

Adam Matak holds a BFA from the University of Windsor and an MFA from Tufts University & School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Solo exhibitions include Assembly Gallery (Hamilton), Le Gallery (Toronto), ARTCITE Inc. (Windsor), Agnes Jamieson Gallery (Minden Hills), and the Thames Art Gallery (Chatham). Matak’s work has been featured in the textbook Art Works as well as The Hamilton Spectator, The Globe and Mail, National Post, and The Boston Globe, and is held in public and private collections across Canada and the United States.
