In memoriam: Stephen Brookbank (1968-2024)

It is with heavy heart that we share the passing of artist Stephen Brookbank. Stephen joined the AGH’s Art rental and sales program in 2012. His seminal series The Making of a Place was an ode to Hamilton’s industrial beginnings, and a documentary of him falling in love with the hometown of his beloved wife.

Stephen lived for over a decade in Hamilton, and exhibited regularly at the AGH Annex on James Street North. More recently, he left Hamilton to take up a post at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD University), where he was living and working until he passed from complications with an ongoing illness. We will remember Stephen for his clarity of thought and ideas, remarkable understanding of light, photography and composition, and most importantly his sincere and good natured character. We will miss the opportunities to hear him speak of his artistic practice, past, present and future, and are honored to work with his estate to continue representing his legacy.

If you knew Stephen and would like to make a contribution, his family has asked you please donate to QEII Health Sciences Foundation or the Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute (https://brcri.ca/). Alternatively, the next time you pet a dog or a cat, smile a big one for Stephen.
