Balancing Act
Laine Groeneweg is a Hamilton-based artist, collaborator and educator. He has worked with some of the most recognized names in Canadian contemporary art, as well as developed a reputation for his energetic and audacious printmaking practice.
Following his Bachelor of Fine Arts studies at York University with a focus on new media and video studies, Laine returned to the traditional studio art environment in 2009 and trained at Fondazione Il Bisonte Per Lo Studio Dell’Arte Grafica in Florence, Italy with a focus on traditional printmaking.
In 2012 Laine opened Smokestack Studio in Hamilton, Ontario – a studio that focuses on limited edition printing and the production of print-based artist projects. It is through this studio that he makes his own work as well as that for others.
Laine is most widely recognized for his work in mezzotint. His prints explore the possibilities of a traditional technique in the wake of more contemporary production methods. Often characterized by themes of dream and play, his whimsical imagery blurs the line between reality and fiction.
Laine’s work has been exhibited Nationally and Internationally across North America, Europe, and Asia and is held in a number of public and private collections.
