The “Arrangements” series merges Matak’s compulsion towards collecting and accumulating cultural iconography with his keen eye for interconnectivity. Employing materials like ballpoint pens, graffiti markers, acrylic and spray paint, Matak assembles floral motifs that burst with contemporary culture and art historical references. Matak continues the tradition of symbolic and allegorical meaning in the floral still life, but thrusts the old genre into the present with drastic shifts and distortions in depth, scale and means of representation.
Largely autobiographical, Matak’s latest Arrangements, Flowers from a new Father, feature allusions to wonders, adversities and repetition of activity that accompany becoming a new parent.
