Tonya Cruz is an artist born and raised in Barbados and currently living and working in Toronto, Canada.
Tonya's art draws from nature to convey lessons of the human experience, focusing on 'growth' in the face of adversity in the hope her art will provide a visual language to the viewer's particular season in life. Each painting is intended to tell a story of growth as a nonlinear process, and personal transformation. Her imagery is a gentle breath of nature with soft washes of neutral hues grazing the canvas, creating an ethereal atmosphere, while, against the quiet backdrop, flowers, fruit and branches emerge— whispers of life that bring forth intimate texture and depth into the piece. Each deliberate stroke tells a story, bringing a richness to the quiet that dances between subtly and intricate beauty, as though nature itself is blooming on the canvas.
On art, Tonya states:
"I have so much to be grateful for and so it’s from the outpouring of my grateful heart I create art. I recognize that art is a powerful tool bringing beauty into people lives. When we recognize beauty, like a rainbow, a colourful sky or the pretty scent of a flower, it makes us stop for a moment to consider gratitude. I make art for people’s homes because I believe art creates a special atmosphere which encourages us to invite people inside to share within the beauty, together."
