Sungmi Kong

Sungmi Kong is an artist specializing in exquisite modern Korean paintings, blending traditional techniques with contemporary aesthetics using traditional pigments, such as powdered minerals and stone colours, on Hanji-paper (handmade Korean paper).

Her method of layering brushstrokes results a translucent buildup of colours that soak into the Hanji-paper and diffuse like water, creating soft, natural transitions that create both depth and vitality. This interplay between the pigments and the Hanji-paper embodies the essence of her art—delicate yet profound, inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and find harmony within. Her painting Blue Fish Journey explores resilience, freedom, and serenity. The fish symbolizes navigating life's calm and turbulent waters, representing growth and transformation, while Kong’s blue hues reflect tranquility, introspection, and an emotional connection to nature.

Sungmi Kong’s work is held by collectors in both Canada and Korea, and a documentary film of her process was created by an award-winning Canadian Producer, titled the ‘Healing Portraits Project’.

With an educative background in traditional paint from Dongduk Women’s University in Korea, Sungmi is currently based out of Oakville.
