Pearl Van Geest

Pearl Van Geest is a contemporary artist, arts educator and writer. Much of the inspiration for her painting practice comes from her close observations of the natural world that she collects during her hiking, canoeing and kayaking activities. Her current series of paintings draw on the experience of floating on the surface of certain rivers and lakes. As she describes:

“Paddling along on days when the water's surface is like a mirror, one is immersed in sensation - the vibrations of light, colour, movement, sound and other frequencies. Referencing photographs taken during these trips, I then work to frame the experience as material, gestural and visual as a way of reconnecting with that space. The bisymmetrical compositions resonate with structures and openings in our own bodies, and that of other creatures real or imagined.”

Pearl Van Geest holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from the OCAD University and a Masters of Fine Art from the University of Windsor in Ontario. She has been the recipient of grants from the Ontario and Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts, and her paintings are part of the Canada Council Art Bank's collection. In 2003, she was short-listed for the RBC Painting Prize and in 2015 was awarded the Canadian Art Foundation's Art Writing Prize. Her work is held in numerous private collections in Canada, the United States, Turks and Caicos, Denmark, and Mexico, and the public collections of the Art Gallery of Guelph among others. She is currently based in Guelph, ON.
