Julianna Biernacki
Julianna Biernacki is a textile-based artist currently living and working in Hamilton, ON, specializing in handmade tufted rug pieces that, as a medium, explore the intersection between craft and fine art, changing their functional purpose and reassigning it an alternate purpose.
Using the concept of intersection as an exploration in her medium, Julianna also utilizes it conceptually in her work, reflecting on the intersections within cities, with predominantly Hamilton as her muse. Biernacki cites fascination with the city’s ability to be both industrial and residential, holding space for both grit, and the earnest.
Starting in digital collage inspired by the architecture of Hamilton, nostalgia, and bright colours, Biernacki takes these collages and turns them into blueprint drawings which then turn into hand tufted rugs.
Julianna’s practice has recently grown outside of just art making, she is also deeply involved in Hamilton’s art community as a whole. She is the solo curator at Durand Coffee where she invites Hamilton artists and artists surrounding to exhibit on a bi-monthly basis. She also founded and hosts Open Window artist talks at Rooney’s café bi-monthly where artists are invited to speak about their practice. Julianna has also led many tufting and punch needle workshops in Hamilton and Toronto.
Julianna has exhibited work in many of Hamilton’s art spaces such as B-Side Gallery (2022 The Other side of now and 2024 A Love Letter to Hamilton), AGH Art Sale (2024), Hamilton Conservatory for the Arts (2023 The Person and this Moment) and many more.
